The fruit of the American Beech is the beechnut. It has a short stalk, light brown and prickly burs. The exterior casing splits into four parts exposing the nut inside in the autumn. The nut is about 5/8 inch long, triangle-shaped and shiny brown. They are an excellent food for many forest animals.
