Simferopol international airport (click here) in Crimea is operating normally, media reports that it was captured are untrue, airport employee told RIA Novosti news agency by telephone.
Earlier, some media reported about the capture of the airport by unknown gunmen.

Five hours ago the Washington Post reports, the former President is said to have arrived in Russia. Perhaps all the confusion and armed men at the airport were an escort for Yanukovych. There is only one reason why armed anybody were at a 'normally' operating airport. It is my guess a government official was flying a short hop to somewhere.

Yanukovych made his appeal for protection (click here) in a written statement released simultaneously by two Russian state news agencies: “I have to ask Russia to ensure my personal safety from extremists,” he wrote. On Thursday it became known that Turchinov will visit the Crimea, Head of the Mission of Ukraine to NATO, Ambassador Igor Dolgov announced. “There are steps that inspire us for the peaceful solution of the problem. At present, the main goal is to refrain from armed clashes,” Dolgov said.
