Senator Rand Paul knows Donald Trump is a serious contender. There is no doubt. I don't know why that lie is necessary.

Forbes’ Randall Lane (click here) interviewed upwards of 80 sources to determine that Donald Trump’s net worth is $4.5 billion, Business Insider reports.
Trump, who has repeatedly claimed a net worth of over $10 billion, doesn’t agree.
He accused Forbes of trying to make him look bad, calling the publication “bankrupt” and “incompetent,” adding in an interview with Lane that a “respected magazine that’s coming out” will value him at $11.5 billion.
The argumentative Republican presidential candidate told Forbes: “I think you’re trying to make me as poor as possible.”...
I suppose in finance reputation means something, but, mostly it's the balance sheets that count.
In politics it is different. If Donald Trump can be proved a liar his 'brand' will lose it's momentum and reputation.
I am sure Donald Trump has little use for unions, but, the facts are plain. The article in the entry before this cited a 'poison article' to eliminate unions as a detriment to the USA middle class. So, given the character illustrated in Forbes' hatred of unions and the USA middle class, I'd say the magazine has a long way to go in it's accuracy in standing in opposition to the value placed on Mr. Trumps brand.
