If this was about sixty years of lost Russia history, then why not the UN? Why the guns? Why the human rights violations? Why the imprisonment and violation of international law?
Before Yanukovych left the Ukraine all was right with the world. This entire annexation effort is nonsense, violates international law and treaties and offends many countries in the world. Russia is not trustworthy.

...On the day in 2008 (click here) when Russia formally recognized the enclave as
independent of Georgia, young men hung out of their car windows, waving
Russian flags and spraying pedestrians with champagne. Officials
daydreamed about building an economy based on tourism, like those of
Monaco or Andorra.
That
has not happened. These days South Ossetia’s economy is entirely
dependent on budgetary funds from Russia. Unemployment is high, and so
are prices, since goods must now be shuttled in through the tunnel, as
long and thin as a drinking straw, that cuts through the Caucasus ridge
from Russia....
South Ossetia is not a direct analogy, but, in 2008 the Russians coming over the border was better than dying. That threat did not exist in the Crimean Peninsula. This was a pure unadulterated land grab for Russia. There were treaties in place and Russia spit in the face of The West because it gives them that feel good feeling.
If the Crimean Peninsula wanted to be part of Russia there are proper channels to pursue. There are treaties to be honored and procedure to follow to insure the peace is preserved and there won't be unrest and ultimately fear of each other so the problems escalate in the future. Russia set up the Crimea to fail and ultimately it will. The West has to increase the strength of the post soviet states that do not want alignment with Russia and provide for the safe defense of the nation's borders.
There is no way Russia can be a trusted partner to any treaty now in regard to future elections in the Ukraine, either.
Why sign treaties with Russia if they only use them as place holders to assault independent nations sometime when it is convenient in the future?
I can't believe there was not one word of dissent in Russia. Not one word of dissent. The Russians and their society have a long way to go. I thought they had accomplished much, but, it would appear they have accomplished nothing at all.
The West is going to have to resolve the issue of a violated treaty. Secretary Kerry may very well need to address the UN General Assembly in order to stop this aggression and provide stability to the region.
The USA and Europe have to be serious about the integrity of treaties or why bother, simply settle everything with guns and bombs. Either the world wants civilized discourse to settle disputes or it rather kill people. This is the year 2014, the time has come to realize peace and prosperity matters.
If the global community doesn't want to stop the next George W. Bush, then what do they want?
