WASHINGTON — President Obama, (click here) apparently resigned to President Hamid Karzai’s
refusal to sign a long-term security agreement with the United States
before he leaves office, told him in a phone call on Tuesday that he had
instructed the Pentagon to begin planning for a complete withdrawal of
American troops from Afghanistan by the end of the year.
But
in a message aimed less at Mr. Karzai than at whoever will replace him,
Mr. Obama said that the United States was still open to leaving a
limited military force behind in Afghanistan to conduct training and
counterterrorism operations....
Let's see,...hmmm...2001 to 2002 is one year, 2002 to 2003 is two years,...and 2013 to 2014 is thirteen years.
And today Afghanistan is no more democratic than the assembly of legislators on the Moon. What are we doing there? Afghanistan, not the Moon. I know why the robots are on the Moon, something about mining. What gives the USA the right to mine the Moon? I don't believe the USA has declared a "Moon Land Rush" nor has the right to do so.
Karzai likes to call his assembly of legislators democracy, but, when they leave they return to the War Lordships and the peasants rejoice.
While on the subject of mining:

Afghanistan's dream of using profits (click here) from its vast mineral resources to
fund post-war development is fading after China signalled its intention
to undo a multi billion-dollar agreement that had been underpinning
Kabul's plans for creating a mining industry....
Clearly, President Karzai and his warlord assembly has not embraced the idea of inviting investors to their mining enterprise. Carrying out capitalism doesn't really lend itself well to warlord environments.
I'd like to point out how willing President Karzai was to seek a country to exploit it's natural resources that has a really lousy human rights record. The Chinese mining methods are legendary. I take it Murphy Mining didn't bid for the job in Afghanistan, right?

Charleston, West Virginia’s largest city and capital, (click here) has just begun to reopen after a coal processing chemical storage facility spilled into the Elk River, rendering the city’s water unusable for 300,000 people. While the spill was not a direct result of coal mining, it was another telling reminder of toll this dirty industry has taken on the state.
Outside of Charleston, the waters of West Virginia are being poisoned and buried at an alarming rate due to a practice called mountaintop removal. Mountaintop removal sounds about as bad as it is. The mountaintops of this beautiful landscape are blown off, and then dumped into nearby valleys and streams....
