Darwin on alert as Ingrid batters coast
March 13, 2005 - 7:24PM
Darwin was on high alert Sunday night as Cyclone Ingrid continued its fierce march across Australia's top end after devastating the tiny community of Croker Island.
Darwin, which only months ago marked the 30th anniversary of the death and destruction Cyclone Tracy delivered, was Sunday night braced for the arrival of a storm of equal power.
Category four Ingrid threw her fury at the community of Croker Island overnight, and was Sunday evening heading straight for the Tiwi Islands, 80km north of Darwin.

Australia's top 100 public intellectuals
Sport and showbiz elites hog the limelight while our great minds struggle for recognition. In a Herald survey, Michael Visontay seeks out the nation's guard of leading thinkers.
Intellectual is an uncomfortable word in Australia, and we live in an age when euphemisms are found for uncomfortable words. These days people tend to be categorised as smart, clever, bright rather than intellectual - the response of a culture driven by speed and solutions rather than inquiry and confrontation; a society that glosses over awkwardness.
