"We are not into partcular love or limited atonement. As a matter of fact we consider it heresy."
Dead at the age of 73, Reverend Falwell never knew or cared about 'the place' of religion in American society and would have demanded to be the First Secretary of Religion if he could talk George Bush into adding it to his cabinet.
His legacy is Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. My sincerest sympathies to those that loved him. I have a right to my view of the world as well. If it was up to Rev. Falwell I would be deprived of that.
Reverend Falwell was among the first Evangelical Televangelists that took ministering into sensationalism. He confronted people in the entertainment field as well as politics to make a statement of bravery. He insisted his God would rule all his activities and give him devine grace in winning every media battle he purported to be in defense of his faith. He did this whether or not the media battle was appropriate or not. He used 'Freedom of Speech' to an end game to attempt to secure the US Constitution away from it's expansive freedoms to 'hammer' home the 'opportunity' of advancement of religion as the sole reason for legislation.
The 'idea' that Freedom of Religion would ever be a problem in the USA is simply bizarre. And yet he instilled the idea that every wholesomeness of the people of the USA would be wrested away from the very people in the pews of this nation. His reasons were wrong, his approach was wrong and he has caused more problems in this nation than he ever solved. He wrested away the idea that 'freedoms of the individual' were paramont to those of religious bias and that in my opinion will be his legacy more than a university can overcome. He is among those that assisted a corrupted political party to power, advocated war for it's cronies costing the American people debtedness that will last generations while their country is still unsecure in the face of insidious terrorists. In backing such corruption and war he has joined a rank of people this country will someday hold accountable for the compromise it now faces and will continue to face in the future.
I would never wish anyone ill or seek enjoyment in their death. I sympathize with those that found solice in his ministry, but, as a person of God, in my opinion he never was much of a leader so much as a victimizer.
