Chapter 10 has never been more important. Estrogen and the Women's Helath Initiatve is something I know something about.

...The Journal of the American Medical Association (click title to entry - thank you) reported that certain woman who used only estrogen during the study had markedly reduced risk for breast cancer and heart attacks.

Confused?...

Actually, no.

Previous to the Women's Health Initative there were doctors still concerned about women.  It took the Women's Health Initiative, an independent body to actually weed through the 'good' aspects of therapy and the bad ones.  Previous to that physicians were left to accept research by pharmaceutical companies and the occassional study out of univeristies.  Women and minorities have not been a priority in setting standards of care.

However.

In the 1980s I did a brief study in a hospital library about estrogen and what exactly if anything was being said.  Actually, there was a lot being said.

The method of communicating between physicians regarding women's health were symposiums.

In the early 1980s there was a dedicated symposium to estrogen alone and with every paper presented the evidence was overwhelming.

Ready?

Women live two-thirds of their lives with 'tissue' supported by circulating estrogen.  At advanced age, then in the 70s, it was felt there was dramatic changes in women's health due to loss of significant estrogen levels.  Every body system in a women't body was effected.  There was higher incidence of athlosclerosis, heat disease, bone deterioration, gastrointestinal 'tone,' nervous system depletion accompanied by mental deterioration.

Oh, yeah, loss of urinary tract tone and function as well.

It was a foregone conclusion women that received estrogen replacement therapy were healthier and happier for a long period of time.

Then, the major setback was thrombosis.  Blood clots in the legs, which can be deadly.

Have a better day.
