If candidates leave the path of civil dialogue in their campaigns that is an ethics violation. If media outlets engage in hate speech and false information, that is an ethics violation to the FCC and if there are specific attacks such as "Lock whoever up," that is a personal attack and requires police notification. Freedom of Speech is a very important component of a democracy, but, when it is used to escalate violence and/or fear, it is no longer legal.

But, Trump put some of the blame for the current political climate on the news media.
