For as brief, as noted in this view, as the storm touched the Guff waters there wasn't enough velocity to continue on a northwest path. It would seem as though, and gratefully, so far this season the Gulf Coast is safe. Besides the flooding occuring now, the fun and games will be when Ernesto hits the Atlantic and whether the water is warm enough to bring a tropical depression back to life as a significant storm.

CAMAGUEY, Cuba (AP) - Tropical Storm Ernesto killed at least two people in Haiti, but otherwise let the Caribbean off relatively easy before heading north for Florida yesterday.
Tens of thousands of people evacuated before Ernesto drenched eastern Cuba began returning home yesterday morning as the storm pulled away from the island's northern coast. They were grateful to find houses still standing and belongings dry after the storm turned out to be relatively tame.
